Expectations in Math and Science (GEMS) kits were developed by the Lawrence
Hall of Science at UC Berkeley for grades 2 through 8. The list of kits
can be seen here.
Each kit comes with a Teacher's Guide.
GEMS Teacher's Guides are clearly organized, easy to use, and do not require any special background in math or science. Each classroom session in the guides includes an overview, materials list, and preparation steps, followed by clear, step-by-step instructions for effective classroom presentation. Background information is provided for the teacher, along with photographs, illustrations, and, often, examples of student work. Throughout each guide are comments on presentation strategies and practical advice to help the teacher, many suggested by teachers who tested the units. The guides may also be used without the kits and the lesson plans can be modified to fit the class level. Kits and manuals are available to Partners and teachers. The Livermore School District Office at 685 E Jack London Blvd. has a complete set of GEMS Guides. Dick Farnsworth at LLNL has graciously provided, on long term loan, the following GEMS kits which are stored at Livermore District Office Call 606-3238 to check on availability. Also, please send an email to Dick Farnsworth at LLNL to tell him when you use a kit.
The San Joaquin County Office of Education has nearly all of the Gems kits which are available for loan. Call 209-468-4880 to check for availablity and to arrange for use. |
